Navigating the Complexities of Trust in US Policing: A Holistic Approach to Community Engagement, De-escalation, and Independent Oversight

Your sharp-tongued editor is here to tackle the thorny issue of public trust in U.S. law enforcement, or, as it’s increasingly known, the public distrust in U.S. law enforcement. Because, oh, brilliant, it seems that after years of national conversations, high-profile tragedies, and more promises of reform than a politician’s campaign trail, we’re still staring down a significant deficit. A recent study from the University of Michigan’s Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP) has graciously confirmed what many have been shouting from the rooftops: communities with actual policies aimed at improving police-community relations tend to experience higher levels of trust. Sure, that makes perfect sense – treat people with respect and transparency, and they might, just might, trust you a little more. What could possibly go wrong with that logic?
