Michigan Public Policy Survey (MPPS) Spring 2024 Sheriffs and Police Chiefs, Question 27

Have heard about prosecutors across the country implementing reforms to local criminal justice

Full Question Text

Q27. Now we would like to ask you a few more questions about your views of the relationship between police and prosecutors.

In recent years, there has been a growing number of prosecutors across the country implementing reforms to local criminal justice systems, such as not charging certain types of offenses, and, in many cases, directing individuals to diversion programs instead of to prosecution. Prosecutors throughout the state of Michigan are facing growing pressure to adopt similar reforms.

However, many of these prosecutors recognize that they require buy-in from local police departments and are investing more effort into ensuring police are supportive of proposed reforms before implementing them.

How much, if at all, have you heard about prosecutors working closely with police departments on proposed reforms to local criminal justice systems before implementing any changes?
