Renewable Energy in Iowa
Historically, Iowa has been an energy leader in the United States, producing more energy than the state consumes and exporting the excess. However, this leadership has not been driven by strong or evolving statutory climate mandates, but rather by a state-led initiative to invest in a more resilient grid. Iowa was the first state to develop a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) under the Alternative Energy Production Law in 1983. This legislature functioned more as a foundational policy signal rather than a sustained deployment mechanism, signaling a state-led movement towards renewable development in the 1990s and 2000s. Today, wind energy contributes almost 60% to the total energy generation mix in Iowa.
