Applied Policy Seminar: Public Policy 578

Astute analysis of survey data is a critical tool in the policy analyst’s arsenal. In this course, students will hone their skills by conducting a research project for state-wide nonprofit organizations using data from a unique internet-based survey research program launched this year: The Michigan Public Policy Survey (MPPS). The MPPS has been developed by the Ford School’s Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP) to investigate Michigan local officials' opinions, priorities, and perspectives on a variety of important public policy issues and solicit information about the policymaking opportunities and innovations taking place in their counties, townships, cities, and villages.  Students in this course will be among the first to analyze and report upon the data from the inaugural Spring 2009 wave of the MPPS addressing local fiscal issues and economic development, in cooperation with local and state nonprofit organizations devoted to local policy issues.
